Installing Windows 7 – My Experience

Last night I decided to install Windows 7 on my desktop. When I do a complete reinstall of an OS I like to set aside an entire day to do this. After all, I need to install the OS, download all the latest patches, transfer my files back, install all my applications, set my settings, and so on…

Here’s the play-by-play for my Windows 7 Install:

  • Reformat using Windows Vista x64 (I wanted a fresh install. It’s probably been a couple of years.. Oops).
  • Start Windows Updates. Reboot numerous times.
  • Sleep (12:21 AM).
  • Wake-up and start updates again (10:43 AM). Reboot numerous times.
  • Rake/cleanup the yard.
  • Check and continue with updates. Reboot numerous times.
  • Make and eat dinner (chicken on the grill). Continue updates. Vista Service Pack 1, finally!! Reboot again…
  • INSTALL WINDOWS 7!!!
  • Find out that my wireless card is not compatible with Windows 7 (7:43 PM).. Priceless/Epic FAIL.
  • Windows 7 installed without internet and updates…
  • Calling it quits (8:50 PM).

More to come…

You could have installed the upgrade as a custom install. Then don’t enter any of the serial key info and just hit next. Then you can upgrade from the clean install you just did. Then enter your serial key. We do it at work all the time. Does not take a whole day :)

I’m so confused on what you just said Tyler… I installed Vista from a clean install, Installed Windows 7 after Vista SP1 was installed, and then it didn’t like my Microsoft wireless card. Windows 7 stated that it needed the Vista SP1 before installing… sounds like poo to me but hey, MS makes the rules.

Basically you can install a clean version of windows 7 with the upgrade disc. You just install windows 7 twice. Then you don’t have to get all the vista update because you are upgrading from windows 7. http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp

Well then… I guess that was just silliness on my part.. So, you’re trying to say that I wasted at least half a day doing updates.. Ok, lesson learned for next time. Either way, I still don’t have internet :P What’s your fix for that smarty-pants?

  5. Steve says:

Why did you install Vista before Win7? This makes no sense to me.

And the internetz fix is easy, use Vista drivers in Win7. HUZZAH.

  6. Shea says:

It was an upgrade version of Win 7. I could have installed XP first but didn’t feel like it, so I went with Vista. As for the internets and per my Facebook reply: 50′ cord did the trick, perform updates, and not I have wireless again. :) Now you’re making me second guess my install… I should have used my academic disc.
